EXW (Ex Works) Incoterm: Meaning & Pricing (2024)

What is EXW (Ex Works)?

EXW (Ex Works) is an Incoterm established by the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) where the seller's responsibility is to make the goods available at their premises (factory, warehouse, etc.), and the buyer assumes all costs and risks associated with transporting the goods from that point to the final destination. Under EXW, the seller has minimal responsibility, making it one of the most buyer-favorable Incoterms in international trade.

Key Features of EXW

  1. Seller’s Responsibility: The seller's responsibility is limited to making the goods available at their premises (or another agreed-upon location). The seller is not required to load the goods onto the vehicle provided by the buyer or to handle export customs clearance.
  2. Buyer’s Responsibility: The buyer assumes all responsibility and costs after the goods are made available, including loading, transportation, export customs clearance, insurance, import duties, and taxes.
  3. Risk Transfer: Risk transfers from the seller to the buyer as soon as the goods are made available at the seller’s premises.

Seller’s Responsibilities

  • Goods Availability: The seller must ensure the goods are packaged and ready for collection at their premises or agreed location.
  • Minimal Involvement: No further involvement is required from the seller once the goods are made available. However, they may assist with loading at the buyer’s request, though this is not mandatory under EXW.

Buyer’s Responsibilities

  • Loading Costs: The buyer is responsible for loading the goods onto their vehicle or carrier.
  • Export and Import Clearance: The buyer handles all aspects of export and import customs clearance, including any associated taxes and duties.
  • Freight and Insurance: The buyer arranges and pays for all transportation and insurance to the final destination.

EXW Shipping Pricing in 2024

When determining pricing under EXW, it is essential to consider the following:

  1. Seller’s Costs:
    • Manufacturing and Packaging: The seller only incurs costs associated with producing and packaging the goods.
    • Storage: If the buyer delays collection, the seller may charge for storage.
  2. Buyer’s Costs:
    • Loading and Transportation: The buyer must cover the costs of loading the goods, all transportation fees (e.g., road, rail, sea, or air freight), and logistics from the seller’s premises to the final destination.
    • Export and Import Duties: The buyer is responsible for export duties, import duties, and taxes in both the origin and destination countries.
    • Insurance: If the buyer wishes to insure the goods during transit, they must bear the insurance cost.

Example Scenario

Scenario: A company in France sells electronic components to a buyer in Canada using EXW.

  • Seller’s Responsibilities:
    • The seller makes the electronic components available for pickup at their factory in Lyon.
    • They do not assist with loading or customs paperwork.
  • Buyer’s Responsibilities:
    • The buyer arranges transportation from the factory, covers all shipping costs, manages export customs clearance in France, and handles import clearance in Canada.
    • They are responsible for loading the goods, insurance, and any import duties.

EXW vs. Other Incoterms

Incoterm Seller’s Responsibility Buyer’s Responsibility Risk Transfer Point
EXW Minimal; make goods available at premises Handles everything from loading to delivery Seller's premises
FCA Delivery to a specified location, including export clearance Transport from the handoff point, import duties, insurance Seller delivers to carrier
CIF Costs, insurance, and freight to the destination port Import clearance and final delivery Destination port
DDP Full responsibility, including duties and taxes Minimal; receive goods at the agreed destination Agreed location

Conclusion

EXW is a favorable Incoterm for sellers, as it places the bulk of the responsibility and risk on the buyer. This term is most commonly used in situations where the buyer has experience in handling all aspects of international transportation and customs. Understanding EXW can help businesses streamline their international shipping processes and allocate responsibilities efficiently. At HUAQI International Logistics, we are dedicated to guiding our clients through the complexities of international trade and helping them choose the most suitable Incoterms for their business needs.
